SIOP is a model of instruction that was developed in order to help make mainstream content comprehensible for ELLs.

The model acknowledges the particular challenges met by ELLs as they learn English through the currciulum and offers teachers key strategies to help ELLs in achieve both academic success and langauge success.
The protocol includes some basics such as always including a clearly articulate curriculum learning intention and a language learning intention. It also suggests more challenging (for the teacher) elements to achieve good instruction, such as building schema based on students’ prior experience, their interests and their lives.
